The Politeama is a clear example of neoclassical architecture: it was initially designed as an outdoor amphitheater and then provided with a cover. This theater, designed by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda and opened in 1891, has the capacity to host nearly five thousand people: it is a charming place, with a perfect acoustics, that has hosted in time the biggest opera singers and players coming from aroung the world. Today the theater is the home of the prestigious Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, and it hosts exhibitions of different kinds, including the board of the "Amici della musica" ("Music lovers") which every year brings the best in Palermo the best jazz and classical music players from around the world.
